The Best Sports Games Ever http://www.videogames-rental.com/sports-games.html http://www.videogames-rental.com/sports-games.html#comments Thu, 01 Jul 2010 10:54:50 +0000 admin http://www.videogames-rental.com/?p=421 NBA Jam 2004 - Pre-PlayedFor those that remember playing on the Atari 2600 or Commodore 64, it blows the mind to think just how far the gaming industry has come in such a short time. Today, games achieve once undreamed of levels of realism, and perhaps this is most readily apparent in the segment of the market catering to the sports fan. However, realism isn’t always the hallmark of a great sports video game, as you’ll see as you take a journey through our picks for the top 8 best sports games ever.

8. Madden 2005

In terms of financial success, the Madden franchise is the greatest sports video game series ever made, but we had a tough time placing it any higher since it has limited appeal outside of North America. Why did we choose the 2005 edition out of the many available? Because 2005 included all of the great innovations we now take for granted.

7. NBA Street Vol. 2

Many people would argue that NBA Jam should be here instead, but those would just be the old farts that can’t let go of the past. Street took NBA Jam and made it cool for a whole new generation.

6. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003

Just as Tiger Woods helped to give the sport broader appeal, the 2003 edition of PGA Tour made golf video games available to entire new segments of the gaming field. People who wouldn’t be caught dead on the links were trashing talking and teeing off with Tiger.

5. World Soccer Winning Eleven 7 International

There are many great football titles to choose from, and reducing them to a single best is no easy task. In the end, we chose this one because it was revolutionary at the time of its release. Many football fans think FIFA, but EA owes a great deal of gratitude to this Konami product.

4. MLB 09: The Show

Unlike the Madden series, games geared around America’s other pastime sell extremely well outside of North America. MLB 09: The Show stands apart because it is still the standard for realism in a baseball game, and realism is king in baseball video games.

3. NHL ’94

You knew that there had to be a hockey game in the list somewhere, but did you expect it to be a mid-90s entry? Maybe not, but when it comes to hockey video games, we think fun trumps graphics. This is the most enjoyable hockey game ever assembled.

2. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2

There was a time when many of us wouldn’t even consider skateboarding a sport, but that has all changed. THPS2 is not only the greatest skateboarding game ever made, it revolutionized sports games in general with its fluid animation.

1. Punch-Out!!

When one sits down to create a list of the greatest sports video games ever made, one might as well start by pencilling in Punch-Out in the number one slot. No video game has ever captured the worldwide imagination quite the way this one did.

Well, there you have them, the top 8 best games ever according to us. We’re sure you disagree with at least a few. Where would the fun be if you didn’t?

This technique is referred to as Advanced Computer Modeling (ACM). It became a bench mark for other games to be developed. The soundtrack of the game is popular and has been released on CD with a composition of over 20 tracks.

The History of the Legend of Zelda http://www.videogames-rental.com/history-legend-zelda.html http://www.videogames-rental.com/history-legend-zelda.html#comments Wed, 09 Jun 2010 10:01:51 +0000 admin http://www.videogames-rental.com/?p=411 The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Pre-PlayedThe history on The Legend of Zelda started in 1987 when the video game was released for the NES console. Game designer Shigeru Miyamoto grabbed bits and pieces of genres to create this innovative game. The key characteristic of the series ever since the beginning has been exploration. The first time you ever saw link he was unarmed and thrown in the middle of world that the player had to figure out as he or she went along.

That curious, adventurous spirit of the original has been on display for all 13 of the sequels for Nintendo. The games might have changed from the top-down perspective to side scrolling to 3-dimensional worlds, but the concept is the same: “Explore, see what’s out there!”

“Zelda II: Adventure of Link”, is probably the most controversial in all the series. Link was taken from the comfortable top down level and put in a side scrolling view. It was a game that was risky, as it would alienate all the fans of the original. But to this day, many regard as an underrated treasure.

The series went back on to its more comforting top-down view in its pre-N64 days. “A Link to the Past” for the Super Nintendo and “Link’s Awakening” for the Gameboy brought back the gameplay that everybody was used to.

The pinnacle to many in the series was “Ocarina of Time”. It ushered in the next generation of gamers. Released for the Nintendo 64, it was the first of the Zelda games to be displayed in 3-D. Not only is it regarded by critics as the greatest Zelda game, but many feel it is the best video game of all time. The game offered incredible innovations and groundbreaking gameplay. Even with the facelift, it still encompassed the heart of what made the original so great.

Next in line was “Majora’s Mask”, which came out in 2000 for the N64. Although additions were made to the game, it had a more serious tone, than many fans of the series just weren’t used to. The game didn’t have the childlike innocence that was so prevalent in the prior games.

Another interesting and controversial step in the series came with the release of “The Windwaker” in 2003. The controversy surrounding the game was the cel-shaded graphics. “The Windwaker” was geared towards a younger audience. Nintendo wanted to give kids of this generation that same magical journey that were given to the kids of the 1980s.

When Nintendo came out Wii, people wondered what kind of Zelda would they be getting. The truth is fans got an amazingly detailed and stylized version. The game displays the pioneering controls of the Wii remote and Nunchuk’s in all its glory. In short, many believe it’s the best game in the series since “Ocarina of Time”.

With Zelda games having such a long and illustrious history, it’s hard to possibly fathom, what else is in store for this mighty series.

Forza Motorsport 3 Review http://www.videogames-rental.com/forza-motorsport-3-review.html http://www.videogames-rental.com/forza-motorsport-3-review.html#comments Mon, 07 Jun 2010 10:44:54 +0000 admin http://www.videogames-rental.com/?p=406 Forza Motorsport 2 - Pre-PlayedForza is the 360′s answer to Sony’s Gran Turismo, but hasn’t quite enjoyed the same acclaim and popularity. Does this third iteration finally change that?

I think so… but let’s have a quick look at the game.

Al the menus are redone, and the nose-down serious approach is still there, but there is a new organizational system for races. Simulation mode allows players to participate in races on a calendar, kind of reminding me of the Race Driver series. There are also championship races that happen around once a month, but you can forgo this style of gameplay entirely and choose a race at a time, like Forza 2.

There’s a great updated list of cars, including a very rare (well, not virtually I suppose) Ferrari FXX, and more common but no less desirable Audi R8 V10 and Veyron. There are also cars that you might actually race with in real life, like the 370Z, Mitsu Evo X and even some super-humble options like the Ford Focus RS. What is definitely not cool is that some of the most desirable cars in the game exist only in a Limited Collector’s Edition disc. Did they think the rest of us don’t want to race a Gallardo Superleggera or Porsche 911 GT3 RS?

Drivetrain swapping is an interesting part of the game, which I enjoyed. There’s an easy upgrade feature for those who aren’t all that into tuning, but they do level the playing field quickly.

The way the game plays hasn’t changed that much, which can be a good thing or bad depending on how you look at it. There’s a few new tracks, but the real showstopper are the graphics. GT5 on the PS3 looks very good, and I’d say that Forza 3 equals it. Like GT5, Forza focuses more on the car models than the tracks, but the AI still needs help.

Basically, Forza 3 offers a formidable package that will appear to anybody that likes simulation-style racers. When used with a nice wheel and playseat, you can really feel like you’re in the game.
